Licence
Whether you plan on flying purely for pleasure or a career, you have to start at the beginning. The Private Pilot Licence is where your adventure in aviation starts.

PPL Advantages
Once in possession of your Private Pilot Licence:
- You are permitted to carry passengers.
- Fly for business.
- Fly for pleasure.
- Personal transportation.
If your ultimate goal is to become a professional pilot, you will have to obtain a Commercial Pilot Licence.
The starting point however, remains the Private Pilot’s Licence.
What are the requirements for a PPL?
Medical: You must be declared medically fit by an aviation qualified medical examiner. Any normal healthy person should be able to pass the medical fitness test.
Legal Requirements:
- Be at least 17 years of age in order to go solo.
- You must complete a minimum of 45 hours total flying time and 25 hours of dual flight training.
- Complete a minimum 15 hours of solo flight time of which 5 hours shall be solo cross country.
- Complete the following theoretical exams:
- Air Law
- Meteorology
- Navigation
- Radio Telephony Procedures
- Aircraft Technical and general
- Principles of Flight
- Flight Planning and Performance
- Human Performance
- Pass a flight test consisting of general handling and a navigation test.
- Have completed a restricted radio course (this is part of your PPL course).
- English Proficiency level 4 and above.
General:
What happens when I arrive at Lanseria Flight Centre?
- Lanseria Flight Centre is open 7 days a week from 06:00 to 18:00.
- After enrolling at LFC, students will have a medical assessment booked and will receive a PPL Ground School kit.
- The course is structured in such a manner that all reference material is available to students enabling accurate preparation for lessons.
- Each student is assigned a specific flight instructor to guide them through the course, the course is designed on a one on one basis ensuring you of individual attention at all times guiding through every step.
- Every two hour time slot allows for a pre-flight brief and a debrief for each flight.
Training Aircraft: Currently all our ab-initio training is conducted on Cessna C172’s.


Private Pilot Licence format
Duration 3-4 months
- Enrollment procedures complete.
- Medical examination carried out by SA aviation doctor.
- Student and Private Pilots Licence application fees.
- 2 Passport photographs.
- Pilots kit issued: Required books, manuals, maps, rulers, protractors, flight computers and fuel testers.
- Ab-initio flight training and briefings commence, approximately 15-20 hours of dual flight training until the students are prepared for their first solo flight.
- Solo flying, approximately 5 hours of solo consolidation in the circuit of which a minimum of 3 solo hours have been accumulated.
- Advanced training commences to complete the balance of the syllabus which will include a combination of dual and solo flights conducting advanced training.
- Cross countries will commence, approximately 5 hours dual and a minimum of 5 hours of solo cross countries.
- Introduction to basic instrument flying which will can be done in the aircraft or on the simulator, this is optional but highly recommended.
- Test preparation will consist of a combination of dual and solo flying until the theoretical and flying standard is achieved.
- The final flight test will include a cross country, general handling and all procedures.
- At the start of your training you will receive the ground school theoretical schedule, the ground school is mandatory and consists of the following subjects.
- Air Law.
- Human performance.
- Principles of flight.
- Aircraft technical and general.
- Navigation.
- Flight planning and Performance.
- Radio telephony.
- Meteorology.
- In addition to the SACAA examinations you will be required to write a technical, pre solo, pre solo general flying and restricted radio examinations.
Please note that these are the minimum hours required and depending on the students aptitude and diligence the hours may vary.
On completion of the Private Pilots Licence you are now ready to commence with the Commercial Pilots Licence.

Flight Training programmes

Commercial Pilot Licence
A commercial pilot’s licence is the last phase of a series of training modules to be completed before you can submit your licence to the SACAA and finally receive your Commercial Pilot’s Licence.

Frozen ATPL Licence
A Frozen ATPL License is when a candidate currently has a Commercial Pilots Licence with an Instrument Rating and has completed their exams towards their Airline Transport Pilots Licence.

EASA Frozen ATPL License
Progress with little or no previous flying experience from Private Pilot’s License to a Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL) level with ‘frozen ATPL’ and Multi-Engine (ME) Instrument rating (IR) in approximately 15 months.

Ground School
Lanseria Flight Centre offers comprehensive training required to obtain the Private Pilot’s Licence, Commercial Pilot’s Licence and Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence.

Night Rating
A night rating allows you to act as pilot in command of an aircraft after sunset until sunrise giving you more flexibility to adapt your time schedules after dark or early morning.

Instructor Rating
An instructor’s rating will give you the edge over a pilot who does not have the rating, providing you with one more avenue that you can use to gain hours and experience. It also adds experience and value to your CV and career in aviation.

International Students
