LICENCE
A Frozen ATPL Licence (Airline Transport Pilot Licence) is the last phase of a series of training modules in your journey as pilot to command large commercial multi crew aircrafts.
Frozen ATPL Training Modules
A Frozen Airline Transport Pilot Licence is the last phase of a series of training modules and is laid out as follows:
- The Private Pilot Licence
- The night rating
- The Commercial theoretical ground school and examinations
- Hour building
- The Instrument Rating
- The Multi Engine Rating
- The Commercial Pilot’s Rating
- The Airline Transport Pilot’s Licence ground school and examinations
- The Airline Transport Pilot’s Rating
The Frozen ATPL is when a candidate currently has a Commercial Pilots Licence with an Instrument Rating and has completed their exams towards their Airline Transport Pilots Licence.
Let’s look at the ATPL requirements in more detail below.
Legal Requirements
- A minimum of 1500 hours in total of which:

- 250 hours minimum as pilot in command
- 100 hours minimum as pilot in command by night
- 200 hours minimum as cross country
- You require a minimum of 75 hours instrument flight time of which 30 hours may be accumulated on a simulator
- 21 years old
- Hold a valid class 1 medical certificate
- Hold a valid CPL
- Have completed the theoretical examinations
- Have completed the appropriate training at an authorized ATO

- Aircraft Technical and General
- Radio Aids
- Instruments
- Navigation
- Flight Planning and Performance
After the ground school one can start with their exam attempts. There are numerous mock exam platforms for practicing before attempting to do an actual exam.
Important to note is the fact that these platforms only assist in giving you an understanding of exam question formats and phrasing. The questions may not be identical in the actual exam.
On completion of the above and your final flight test will be a Multi Engine Instrument flight test you will be issued your Airline Transport Pilots Licence.

Frozen ATPL Licence
A Frozen ATPL License is when a candidate currently has a Commercial Pilots Licence with an Instrument Rating and has completed their exams towards their Airline Transport Pilots Licence.
EASA Frozen ATPL License
Progress with little or no previous flying experience from Private Pilot’s License to a Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL) level with ‘frozen ATPL’ and Multi-Engine (ME) Instrument rating (IR) in approximately 15 months.
Ground School

Night Rating
A night rating allows you to act as pilot in command of an aircraft after sunset until sunrise giving you more flexibility to adapt your time schedules after dark or early morning.
Instructor Rating
An instructor’s rating will give you the edge over a pilot who does not have the rating, providing you with one more avenue that you can use to gain hours and experience. It also adds experience and value to your CV and career in aviation.
