How to Validate a foreign Pilot’s Licence in SA

1.

Determine Your Licence Type

Validation requirements differ depending on whether you hold a:

  • Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
  • Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL)
  • Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL)

Note: For any commercial activity (CPL/ATPL), the process is more involved than for PPLs.

2.

SACAA Requirements for Validation

To validate your UK CAA-issued licence in South Africa, you will generally need to:

Submit the following documents to SACAA:

  • Completed DCA Form CA 61-01.10 (Application for validation of foreign licence)
  • Copy of your UK pilot licence and current medical certificate
  • Copy of your logbook (last 3 pages or 12 months) showing currency
  • Proof of English proficiency (ICAO Level 4 or higher)
  • Proof of identity (passport copy)
  • Letter of verification from the UK CAA (usually sent directly to SACAA)

3.

Pass South African Air Law Exam

All foreign licence holders must pass the SACAA Air Law examination, which covers South African aviation regulations.

You can prepare for this through ground school or online study guides offered by local aviation training centres like LFC.

4.

Undergo a South African Medical (if required)

While your UK medical may be accepted for validation, some applicants—especially for commercial use—may be asked to obtain a South African Class 1 or Class 2 medical from a SACAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner (AME).

5.

Flight Check (if required)

In some cases, SACAA or the flight school you’re working with (e.g., LFC) may require a skills check with a Designated Flight Examiner (DFE), particularly if your licence is being used for commercial or instructional purposes.

How Long Does Validation Take?

If all documents are in order, validation can be processed in 1–4 weeks, but delays are common if verification from the UK CAA is slow or paperwork is incomplete.

6.

Once Validated, You Can:

  • Fly ZS-registered aircraft in South Africa for the duration of the validation
  • Build hours toward a licence conversion, if desired
  • Work toward converting to a full SACAA licence (if applying for permanent privileges)
